If you don't think you can add detail by hand i would suggest you try using subtle tone differences of your primary nebula color to help add depth and shape (using a nebula/cloud brush). If that didn't make any sense, you could also do what i did for my fire at dawn peice.

I painted those nebulas by hand, but i made them at a huge scale, like 8000x8000 or something like that. They consisted of a bunch of really sloppy brush strokes but i sampled colors from a real picture to get all the tones right. Once I scaled them down for the picture they looked much better in the background. (also set them to a color dodge blending mode with a layer mask to help shape it further)

I'm sure the same process could work for you too.

I would also suggest making the space that you can see behind/inbetween the gap in the nebula more crisp, at the moment it all looks like one blurred layer, (in that i mean there is too much gradient banding and pixelation in the dark space background)

I'm crazy about your stars though. The red filtered light of the ones that you can see through the nebula is fantastic. Perhaps adding some different star light colors into the mix of stars that aren't covered by the nebula would compound this superb effect.

yes, I haven't started with the background yet, it will look well at the end.

about the scaling thing, that's a great tip, I used that trick for making ships in one of my pieces.

thanks for the real constructive comments, by the way that piece of yours looks quite neat though I think the small planet would look better with a little of atmoshphere.

about the stars, in fact it's only oe layer on top of all, but because I made them red and later on add them white (copy/paste/change color) the smallest one just look red, but if you say they look like if they were behind even better .

I will also try playing with there color I have something in mind.

I added a little more of detail, but the worst thing is the lighting...

I'm a bit worries about the right side of the nebula, I don't know if I'm getting the lighting right, it's supose to be kinda behind the left side part, but I still want it to be visible.

also, the nebula of the top seems almost in the same plane as the one below, any ideas on how making it look as if it was a bit deeper in the picture?

you can also try making galaxies from hurricane images, it takes a lot of retouching but you already have the base form and structure.

Thanks pogona

That one is gold I didn't know you could do that from an hurricane image. I have had a go at blendening them using Bryce skies and clouds.

Cheers

Karl
