Hi Solar Voyager

VY Canis Majoris is No longer the biggest star in Diametre
in the universe it has been toppled by these stars.

NML Cygni
V838 Monocerotis
KW Sagittarii
KY Cygni
and after all these comes VY Canis Majoris

The Biggest Stars in mass are
R136a1
R136a2
R136c

Someone needs to give these guys a decent name
imagine what they would say if they knew what people
have called them.

Karl

NML Cygni is a really impressive star!  1,650 times the size of our sun -- almost unimaginably large!

Yes thats one big star. Kinda ironic though I bought a box
had VY Canis Majoris written on it and its no longer the
biggest star. But I still like Vy Canis Majoris.

Karl, thanks for the research that you did on this.  It is extremely hard to realize how large stars can be.  Can't imagine a star that would engulf all planets through Jupiter and really up close and personal
with Saturn.  Jan

Hi Jan

Thats ok I think NYM Cyngi May even engulf Neptune but I
am probably wrong(Maths was never my strong point.) I
think that R136a1 and the more massive stars are
youngsters but I am not sure.

Cheers

Karl

Well Karl, my calculations.  the 1650 refers to the radius being that much larger.  The radius of the sun is 432,450 miles.

432,450 miles times 1650 equals 713,542,500 miles.  Saturn is 890,700,000 miles from the sun.

I had to find out for sure what the definition of size was.

Wow your really good at maths

Thats one huge star it will probably destroy a lot things
when it goes hypernova. My guess is it will probably be
gone soon if not already people say Eta Carinae(My
favourite Star) could explode at anytime I disagree I
think due to the fact its Blue and its still got a lot of mass
means its still a young star It would be something to see
through a telescope when it does.

Thanks for the info Jan

Karl

Reading the information on NML Cygni, it appears to be an old dying red hyper giant star that is loosing mass which accounts for the bean shaped asymmetric nebula around it.  IMHO it appears to be expanding and contracting with a period of 940 days (eg looses mass, gravity takes over, contracts until the pressure is equalized, pressure continues to increase expanding it, more mass poofs into space and so forth.  I don't think it will get any bigger and some day will suddenly collapse and finally explode as a hypernova.  If it was a young hyper red giant, it wouldn't be pulsating and loosing mass as it does IHMO.

Sure would like others to give their own opinions  because I may be totally off.

Thats ok Eskhata

Thanks Jan I thought NML Cygni was an older star due to
its size. Shame We barely knew her I don't think NML
Cygni will remain the biggest for long though one day there
will be a Star so big we won't work out how we missed it.
Thats my honest opinion.

Cheers

Karl
