So Jan pointed me towards resources in nebula formation to gain a basic understanding. (Thanks Jan! ) So here is a quick 30 min painting of a nebula I did. For me the most effective nebula art are the ones that are painted instead of a photo manipulation approach (Just my opinion.) So for this sketch I was just trying to get values and forms. I think there is to much detail giving it a stylized feel. I find its very tough to get the subtleties down for a truly realistic nebula. I'm in need of guidance! I will continue to work on these quick studies and maybe that will do the trick but tips are greatly appreciated!

Okay here is another technique i tried. This time instead of using a soft round brush for the whole painting i made some cloud brushes and used them for smudging to give the painting detail. I also painted in B&W and used color corrections in the end. I think i need to find a nice blend between painting the forms with my default soft brush and smudging the details in

Well, for a 30-minute piece, that first one is pretty outstanding!  Reminds me of the Hubble "Pillars of Creation" image!

From a pure quality standpoint, the second one is even better.  The blending of the nebula forms is much more natural looking.

You're right, a blend of these techniques should serve you very well -- excellent work.
