We are in dire need of space artists who have space time for an open source project.

We are creating a "Second Life meets Orbiter and Oolite" simulation (with gaming and multiplayer aspects) -- a great chance to do something with your art, including:
  • ship designs: meshes and textures
  • space station designs
  • backdrops and scenery billboards
  • Stars, planets, asteroids, comets, and other in-system bodies.

You can view or join the project from here...
https://sourceforge.net/p/elitism/wiki/Welcome/

There is no compensation, but the we will have built-in credits for all contributors, so it's a great way to get something on your resume/c.v.

Even if you don't want to become a full time member but would like your art included, simply post to this forum (or reply to me privately) giving your consent, any limitations, wording of credits, etc.

Mesh artwork should be in .3ds or .obj format, textured, and all textured should be square 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024 png, bmp, or jpg format.  Try to avoid star-trek or big-screen lookalikes.

There's some fantastic art currently going to waste -- please join us!

Hi davep

I have some experience in game artwork but there are limitations for the files you the program I use is called Bryce and it can make fantastic space ship and space station designs but it will only make two formats 1 is .br7 and 1 is .obp. How are you making the game because if it is 3d you may want to find someone who can help you more than I can (i think you can import bryce work into something like blender but am not sure. I am currently making ships for a game called space rambles but its only 2d at the moment and I am basically rendering the ship and cutting it out in photoshop and having it as a 2d sprite(a very realistic sprite but a sprite none the less.) I can give you texture files I have made and I can give you star textures if you wish. if you get in touch with me via pm I will give you my personal email if you interested. The ship files are saved as .PNG because they're transparent.

If I can't help I am sure there are plenty of people who will be more than happy to

good luck and hope to hear from you

regards

Karl.

Ps if you go to the downloads section of this site you will see one of my ships she is called the Phoebe Space Craft

Hi Karl,

I believe Bryce will export to WaveFront (obj) files although I have no knowledge as to whether there are any losses (UV maps, normals, etc).

Perhaps you could export one of your designs and we could try it?

Many thanks,

Dave P

Hi davep

I Am sorry for the late reply I have been away for a few days. I am afraid I tried to join source forge but failed I have no employees and my job is non profitable(in others word I work as a volunteer) I will be more than happy to make ships and all other vehicles for you but I really need your input. I will send you a pm via this site with my email address and we can keep in contact that way I will send you the work and you can use it. I would however like the credit for the ships I make you. I can also make you cockpits. If Bryce does export to wavefront I will send you the bryce file as I don't have wavefront and we will continue from there. Let me know if you are still interested.

Cheers

Karl

No problem on the delay.  In the open source community things often take a long time, as people have day jobs, lives, etc.

I don't have Bryce so I can't do the export...unless Bryce is free, do you know?

AFAIK, anyone can sign up for a SourceForge account, but I must admit it's mostly for coding side of things, so it's not necessarily an issue.

Designs and all work will definitely be credited to the contributor -- the strength of open source is that it gives people a chance to be recognized.

Regards,

DP

Hi davep

Bryce 7 Pro is free for a limited time only if you go to www.daz3d.com and download it for your computer you can use it straight away(although you will want to use safari instead of firefox.) I will send you the Bryce Files and you can try import them in your game I am not sure if you can but its worth a try. All you have to do is register with Daz and tick the button to subscribe to their newsletter and you can download it along with 2 other programs that are worth a lot of money they are Hexagon and Daz Studio 4. Hope that helps

Regards

Karl

Ps Bryce 7 Personal Learning editions free but you can't use it commercially.
