What the heck is this? Has anyone seen this before? I ran across this news article (which is not very informative) that describes some sort of metal balls falling from the sky onto Africa. They're apparently man made, but what are they?

One of the comments below the article is from a guy that works for United Technologies on space launch hardware -- He says this is some sort of small tank from a booster rocket that failed to completely burn up on reentry.

My guess is its a bit of debris from the Space Shuttle
I know it sounds a bit weird as the shuttle doesn't go up there anymore but I have looked at bits of the Saturn V rocket and the Shuttles Thrust Structure is very similar its harder to find it than the Saturns but if you type into the search engine. Space Shuttle Thruster Structure and then open a blank window and type in Saturn V Thrust Structure you will see they are similar (The Saturns however is much more complicated.)

I am most likely wrong but thats what I think it looks like.

I'm with Klankster and his rocket scientist source.  More likely it's from a low-orbit satellite or booster that's reentered, or one of Russia's that never made it to orbit.   The shuttle didn't usually leave anything in orbit.  The solid boosters were reusable, and the external tank shouldn't have had too many small tanks attached to it.  One site I read speculated that it was a propellant tank from a spy satellite.

Wherever it came from, it's definitely a gas tank from a satellite, and not some of the more exotic ideas a few commenters have posted on other sites.

Yeah i think you're right, it's probably a discarded fuel tank from some rocket or other. Apparently this is not the first one to land around there, so whoever is using these rockets, they must be heading over Africa on their way into space.

And yeah, the speculation in the comments was definitely worth a laugh
