Hello people!

I'm surprised to see that this contest has escaped the attention of this forum
- entries have been accepted for about two months now, and only a few days
remain (2nd Jan last day). Voting remains open till beginning of february.
Apart from encouraging you to enter
, I have a few thoughts to share.
The highlighted parts are important.

There is a catch: You see, the winner is based entirely on who gets the most likes,
and this has led to lack of quality of submitted artwork. The two leaders have
contributed with this:

1: 123 likes - 2: 84 likes.

Needless to say, any rookie on this forum could contribute with something
more inspiring! And to let any of these posts win would be nothing short
of a scandal!
ESA will have to promote the entry, and will most likely have failed
its' mission in this contest: To inspire people to explore space!

This is where you come in: Either you enter the contest, or you vote for me,
preferrably both.

To vote for me:
(takes less than 60 s):

1: Sign in to Facebook.
2: Click "like" on the "Create Your Space" page.
3: Click "like" on my comment (Fahad Sulehria), with my entry link in it.
4: (optional, but strongly recommended) Tell your friends (web sites, blogs,
facebook, twitter, etc..)!

If I win the main prize, an iPad, I'll give it the voter that gets me the most likes,
you have my word . With your help I can do this, and you will have promoted
space art with quality!

The rules are, concisely, to let yourself be inspired by one of their 11 images posted
on their facebook page, and create ANY form of art. Post a link under the image
that inspired you. The one that gets the most "likes" on each category wins a
bag full of "space goodies". The overall winner gets an iPad, and gets
featured on their website!

Cheers,
Fahad

I'd like to add that we as artists have more power than most of us might think: When people look at our work, whether it is experienced in a book, magazine, documentary or even some sci-fi game/movie, it makes an impression on the mind of the audience. It can inspire them to learn more about the universe.

Look at what Chesley Bonestell, "The Father of Modern Space Art" did with his painting of Saturn, seen from Titan, in the 1930's. It isn't called "The Painting That Launched A Thousand Careers" for nothing. It helped inspire the program that put man on the Moon!

Therefore, it is our responsibility to present work that represents quality, hence, I encourage you to both vote for me, and to participate in the contest!

I agree with you about the images. However, it seems as if it doesn't matter WHAT you create, and they don't seem to bother if it actually is inspired by their work, from what I've seen on their FB-page. you might as well have been inspired by something completely different! If you do post something there, lemme know and you'll have my support!

I'm bothered by the fact that it is a like fest, and nothing based on skill, or aesthetic accomplishment. Nevertheless I really want to win! So that space art can be represented as it truly should.

Thank you for telling your friends!

Hey there, I totally agree with you guys on the quality of artwork there. Also your little speech here was very inspiring. Unfortunetly I don't have time to enter myslef, but I would like to help you out Fahad. Problem is, I can't find a "like" button anywhere! It shows me who likes it but wont let me like it.

What do I do?

You've my vote, Fahad. I'll see if I can get anyone else to do it too. Not for an iPad though...those leading posts are just pathetic.

It's kind of sad, I should have made this post earlier, but was too caught up with other stuff. SV posters should have won all the categories, IMO.
As for the "unlikeable" like, I think you might have missed liking the Main page first. Facebook usually doesnt allow liking comments and other material unless you like the page first.

I see you share my frustration. ESA really should have hired another company to handle this contest. They don't seem very competent, and that is doing unjustice to both ESA, and the space interested community at large.

Actually, I can do the second image, the one with the baby, in less than 30 seconds, as could anyone here on this forum. That includes opening photoshop, and importing the images.

Yeah, I'm not in it for the iPad either. Though the prize itself corresponds to a lot of money, if one would want to sell it. I just want "quality" space art to be associated with big names like ESA/NASA, when they reach out to us who enjoy space. When quality art is combined with scientific articles, it makes for a much more interesting and inspiring reading! In turn that will turn more heads up, towards the sky!

Finally, I want to wish you all a Happy 2011! "May all your wishes come true, except for one, so that you may always have something to strive for!"
