I don't have much knowledge or experience using nodes.

Which nodes are you trying to use? The Material, Composite or Texture nodes?

I really only have experience using the composite nodes.

it's not help using them, but they won't function in blender for me. whenever I try to open them, it goes to the menu but there are no options for nodes to insert.

Okay, I think I understand your problem. I had the same problem when I first started using nodes.

Okay, lets start with the Material nodes. Split the screen up in to at least two parts. Leave one in 3D view and change the other into the node editor. If the cube is in the scene click on it to select it. Now, go into the material buttons window and add a new material to the object. You will see a button in the "links and pipelines" window called "nodes", click on it. That's pretty much all there is to activating the material nodes.

As far as the texture nodes are concerned, blender always crashes when I try to use them. I'm not sure what the problem is though.  But this is basically what you have to do. Load your texture, then click on the "use nodes" button in the texture buttons widow. You will see two nodes in the node editor window. One will be called "Checker", and the other "Output". Delete the checker node by clicking on it and pressing "x" on you keyboard. Then, press the space bar, a window will appear like the one in the 3D window. Place you courser over "Input" and then click on "texture". That is pretty much all I know.

Now to the composite nodes. All you need to do to activate them is to click on the "Composite nodes" button and then click on the "use nodes" button. Then render your scene. It's more in depth then that, but that's the basic.

I hope this helps.
