I was inspired by Tixol's Brutus and Hovelkamp's Aquamarine. You guys have the planet before, in Delta Pavonis. I made The rings following part of a Hovelkamp tut. Hope you guys like it.

I tried it with the rings less transparent, but the porblem is, I used a map of Venus's clouds, and it didn't look right above 50-60% opacity. I'll post a couple versions with more opaque rings, if it helps.

Even Saturn's rings come in varying densities, so that part's fine.

My only question is the stars that seem to be visible through the rings.  If the rings are actually "grainy", and those aren't stars, no problem.  If they are stars, they should be visible in the shadowed areas, just as the stars in the gap are.  After all, the shadow wouldn't block starlight.  There wouldn't be nearly as many as in the gap, but some would show through.

Here ya go, shadow's opacity reduced to 35%. I didn't get rid of the rings under the shadow so that they could interfere with the stars shown. And yes, the rings are grainy, 3% monochromatic gaussian noise.

IMO the first shadow is correct (unless there is another light source, but then the planet dark side should be lit slightly) Also i think the rings are too 'big'. I had a discussion with someone on here a few months ago and we figured that rings can only survive in a band around the world that's not too close to the planet [gravity would pull them into the planet] or too far away [beyond the roche limit they wouldn't have become rings in the first place] What i do is try to keep Saturn in mind when making gas giants. I can vary the sizes of the rings, but i try not to deviate too much

All that scientific stuff done, I really like the planet! Great work!

The rings being that big, regulus, that is easily explained. I thought A) it looked good and B) It was a good distance to allow for the formation of rings without them spiraling down to the planet. Glad you like it though.

I agree with regulus in terms of the shadow -- The original one is probably more physically correct because the shadow side of the planet would have the same illumination as the shadowed section of the ring.  Looks good!
