Okay, quick 'story-board' sketch in Illustrator of an incoming bolide, and the first 1 minute after impact.
This should be a little bit of a challenge since the size, and details
and very realistic blast effect should be a must. Something that
must be 'photo-real' as if you were going to later animate it into
actual footage.
There should be a diminshing debri trail the closer we get to our point
of view (lower left of the sketch), and more crowded materail down the
trajectory well towards Earth's surface.
In scale, the incoming is a mile in diameter and hit (IP=Impact Point) at 120 milers per second.
Suggest it hits in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of the Yucatan so
everyone can show the U.S. and the Atlantic and perhpas England too.
The LEM (the shadowed side) can be wherever you wish.
Jan, and everyone, Go For Throttle Up!
Thanks in advance,
Robert

bound and determined for us to hose up Biloxi Ms and all of those casinos.
You are absolutely right though, the Gulf has one heck of a hole in it or maybe it is the hole.
I need to think about this---a lot Jan
Okay the rest of you guys, get your necks on the old choppin block and come up with something
Okay, you all can come up with your own stats on this puppy. The following website will automatically calculate the energy released, crater size, thermal radiation seismic effects, ejecta, and air blast. You put in distance from impact, projectile diameter, projectile density, impact velocity, impact angle, target density, and target type. http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/
My stats came from living 1000 miles from impact site.
Energy: 1.02 X10^7 megatons of TNT at impact site
Crater Size: 30.42 miles and is a of the complex crater type
Thermal radiation Fireball below horizon
Seimic effect: shaking will occur 322 seconds after impact
Magnitude at impact site: 9.3 on Richter scale (in other words, a really really bad one). Maximum every felt in recorded history was 7. something
At 1000 miles away would have 3.0 to 4 something-feels like heavy trucks passing, wood frames creak-common every week thing in Alaska.
Ejecta: Junk coming down on you arrives 662 seconds after blast in the form of dust.
Air Blast arrives 5366 seconds after blast wind velocity 87 mph.

An assignment for everyone, anyone here and give it the best shot one
can, everyone and anyone---it's open for the challenge. We've
done this two previous times--one with Jupiter being hit with bolides,
and the second was a view from Pluto to Sol for perspective and the
diminished orb of the sun at that distance for brightness.
This above is the third project.
Does that help?

Hi Gav,
You can get a Dilbert M&M dispensing machine-Dilbert is positioned by a computer and when you depress the mouse, several M&M come out into the waste basket. Can also hold and dispense Excedrins

Okay, I'm new here. Is this an art assignment? I know, dumb quetion, but I was searching around for the other two threads and didn't really find anything.
So, if you don't mind a complete rookie here, can someone fill me in on the "rules" for this assignment?
Sorry for being a total noobie, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks

Hi Mike, Welcome to SV.
This is just a fun thing to do. The only rules are the ones stated under "Add Your Artwork" See above, left hand margin
Post it as your thread or topic if you do decide to try your hand at this asteroid impact thing. If you want to post something else (astronomy related) eg stuff posted here by us, that is great too. Looking to see your artwork-most important, have fun. Jan

I'm just a member here, but there are others here who are Admins who would love to welcome you here, formally.
So, welcome, to SV.
This is part three of an assignment I gave folks here so they could
practice their rendering - painting skills, if they are were void of
ideas.
My own website is here:
www.geocities.com/behold_rage/
There are no rules for this at all and you are most encouraged to do
something for this, if you are free and don't have other assignments or
work to do.
Again, welcome,
