Spent a few hours today and yesterday trying to get this one. I based in generally on the sketch provided. Earth and the fiery shockwave region was simple enough. Also, the comet near the Earth was straightforward, as was the trail out in space. The problem was trying to join them up somehow!
I had to keep in mind that, in space, a comet only released dust and ions. Only when it enters the atmosphere does it burn up and go all red and yellow. From this distance, the atmosphere looks thin, so technically the burn-up would be barely visible in the image! But it looked cool so I had to add it in.
I felt a starfield would be nice, but nothing too vivid that it'd take away from the centrepiece, so I left it as a simple non-intrusive background sorta thing.
I may try a new version, looking at the impact site from a much closer viewpoint.

Hi Connor, you did your homework on this one and the time and effort you put into it really shows. It all boils down to,"I like it". Thumbs up indeed! jan

Given that this piece is about 3 years old, I doubt Conor will notice.

The comet might not "burn up" until it hits the atmosphere, but that wouldn't make much difference in this picture. Most of the heat and light come from the impact, and that splashes a lot of molten rock over a large area. The light from that would illuminate both the trailing debris and the ejecta, which itself would likely be at least red hot, so such an impact would probably light up an even larger area. For a night impact it looks about right to me.
