When you get a chance, checkout the cover on the November issue of Astronomy Magazine. It features an outstanding image of the Milky Way by Don Dixon (who also has work displayed in the Expert Gallery here). You can see a much smaller, and much less detailed, version of the image at Don's website HERE.
The image on the Astronomy cover is actually turned 90 degrees (to the right), with much more brilliant color and zoomed quite a bit. The effect is very nice. The link above really doesn't do it justice, but basically serves as a preview. Here's the text that goes along with the image:
"The Milky Way Galaxy spirals its way through the Local Group of galaxies, innocently hiding violence behind its stately mask. Not only is our galaxy shredding minute dwarfs near it, absorbing them wholesale, but several billion years from now it will spectacularly collide and merge with the Andromeda Galaxy."
Beyond this, Don's portfolio of artwork is quite extensive. He has more images available online than most space artists in the field today (almost 400 at present count). So, if you haven't seen Cosmographica yet, it's certainly worth a visit.
