Long-time member Hoevelkamp has uploaded four new planet-making tutorials!  Largely focused on creating planets with 3D software such as Autodesk's 3ds Max, these tutorials take you step-by-step through:

  • Planet texture creation using 3ds Max and Photoshop
  • Creating realistic planetary rings
  • Creating gas giants
  • Creating planets with atmospheres
These tutorials can be found on our Tutorials Page.  A big THANK YOU to Frieso Hoevelkamp!

New, Larger Image Uploads!

I am happy to announce that Solar Voyager will now accept image uploads of up to 1 megabyte per image.  This should make it easier to upload higher quality images without using a different server.  I am taking this action because we want to keep as many images stored on our servers as possible -- We can't control what appears on other image servers and I want to keep our site as family-friendly as possible.

Enjoy the larger upload limits!

Attention: Ringed planet fans!  NASA and JPL have a very nice multimedia presentation from the Cassini probe now available at this link.  There are some beautiful images of the rings and moons, especially Phoebe.

The presentation has links into the JPL site -- This is excellent reference material!

Capturing Heaven

Greg Martin just released his "Capturing Heaven" article, which has been quite some time in the making.  His description is as good as any I could provide, so here it is:

"An article detailing the basic elements of space and how they relate to art, Capturing Heaven has been a project I've been struggling to complete for the last two years. Now it is finally finished and available to the public, for the betterment of all. Over 4,400 words long and image-packed with the best true-life or artistic examples I could find, this article is aimed to help people better understand space and get that essential intuitive understanding that great art stems from."

This is in PDF format and weighs-in at 14.4 mb.  It is being hosted over at DeviantArt.  We talk often around here about the importance of understanding this subject and being able to produce accurate results when desired.  This article goes a long way in delving into these ideas.  It is a very good read.  Take a look via THIS LINK.

Well, I know the month is half over, but this news is better late than never!

Only July 1st, Robert Stephens had the opening for his one man art show at The Attic Gallery, Portland Oregon's oldest and largest gallery.  The show runs the entire month of July.  Robert has been very helpful here at the site, sharing his knowledge on a regular basis.  So if you live in the area be sure to checkout the show.  Here's a quote from the Attic's website, which describes the exhibition:

"ROBERT A. M. STEPHENS, a romantic, illuminist and realistic painter of inspirational oil paintings, is the official flight documentation artist for the NASA Space flights. In this exhibit, he includes the NASA Official Memorial painting for the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia which will go directly to the Kennedy Center Smithsonian Exhibit at the end of this exhibit. Also included are Robert's romantic landscape paintings and still lifes."
