| Space Art encourages us to dream...of what is and what may be. Since the dawn of time, humans have gazed upon the sky with awe and curiosity, imagining what may be found in the vastness around them. The universe is not black and white. Beyond the reaches of our atmosphere lie splashes of wondrous color against the inky backdrop of space. It is fitting that these things be represented in fantastic artistic images. Space artists bring these dreams to life and we believe some of the best examples of this work are right here. |

The National Space Society is sponsoring a space art contest again this year!
The contest is to create artwork showing a settlement in space -- On the moon, Mars, in orbit, etc. Winners will have their work published in the society's 2009 calendar.
For full information, visit this link
One of our resident NSS members, Bambam131, has additional comments in this topic.
There's not a lot of time left, but it would be great to see the work of a Solar Voyager artist featured in the calendar!

We have a lot of great space art here at Solar Voyager. For some time I've been considering printing a 12-month calendar using some of the artwork created by our members. To do this and keep costs down, I would need to print at least 250 copies. The price of this calendar would be around US $10 plus shipping.
If you would be interested in purchasing one of these calendars, please vote in the poll and let me know. If I get sufficient interest, I will start asking for nominations for the calendar images and shoot for production sometime in early Autumn.
Thanks in advance for your input!

Just a reminder: Solar Voyager is a website for "Space Art" -- Stars, planets, comets, asteroids and other space-oriented topics. We do allow man-made elements in these images, such as spacecraft, cities and other habitats, etc., but if posts stray into copyrighted designs such as Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. we reserve the right to remove these items. There are plenty of science-fiction related art sites out there, and if you want to create images with these items, please do so on those other sites.
We have also had some recent posts with religious content. Solar Voyager is not the place for these images. I'm sure there are plenty of religious art sites that would welcome such content.
If you are working on an image and want to create a realistic stellar background for it, you're welcome to share that part of the image and ask for help or suggestions, but please do not post images with copyrighted or religious content.

The University of Wisconsin Astronomy Department, using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope,
has announced that their latest star survey shows that the Milky Way
apparently has a central bar. There was suspicion of this
previously, but the new survey adds evidence that we're living in a
barred spiral galaxy, rather than an ordinary spiral.
The news item and an artists concept of the galaxy structure can be found at http://www.news.wisc.edu/11405.html

I'm pleased to announce our newest site partner, Nova Celestia! This is a new art site hosted by our own
Fahad Sulehria, and though it's still in the early stages, I wanted to introduce all our users to it.
One very nice thing about Nova Celestia is that along with the
beautiful artwork, Fahad has included a great deal of scientific
information on the various celestial bodies that are depicted. If
you know someone who wants to learn more about the universe, this is
going to be a great place to start -- Beautiful pictures and the true
background information, in one place.
Please check out Nova Celestia when you get a chance!

NASA has released World Wind version 1.3.1.1. According to NASA:
"World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into
any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle
Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth
terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there."
This may be a useful tool for helping artists create realistic terrain
for their artwork -- Take a look and let us know if it helps you!

As of today, March 3, we are making a change to our members' image display.
First, we are reserving the "Member's Gallery" forum for finished pieces only.
This will make the gallery a more formal place to view the best of what
Solar Voyager has to offer. In line with the site founder's
intent, all pieces submitted must be space art or astronomical
art. Including spacecraft or futuristic artifacts is fine --
Please restrict these to real-world or original creations, not Star Wars or Star Trek-type designs, for example. We also want to avoid overly abstract or fantasy-based work.
Second, we have set up, under the "Artist's Studio" category, a new
forum called "Works In Progress". This is our new catch-all forum
for all your in-progress work, whether it's a starfield, nebula,
planet, or human artifact such as a spacecraft. We want to
continue the great Solar Voyager tradition of being able to post
in-progress work for comments and critiques, as well as sharing
information on 2D and 3D techniques.
Please help the moderators out and remember to post to the proper
forum. Any posts not in the proper place will be moved -- Don't
take offense at this, we're just trying to keep things in their proper
place!
Thanks, and let's see what you've been creating!

It's been a while since Solar Voyager conducted an interview with a
well-known space artist. Now is your chance to pick our next
interview subject! Please reply to this topic with the name of an
artist you'd like to interview. When we have a candidate, we'll
determine whether to do an on-line or off-line interview and take your
questions!

Attention: Ringed planet fans! NASA and JPL have a very nice
multimedia presentation from the Cassini probe now available at this link. There are some beautiful images of the rings and moons, especially Phoebe.
The presentation has links into the JPL site -- This is excellent reference material!

Imaginova will begin shipping Starry Night Pro 5.0, an upgrade to its versatile astronomy software, tomorrow. The new version integrates the SkyCalendar with observation planner and logs, features a PGC catalog with 980,000 galaxies, a new high-precision satellite tracking feature, over 100 new multimedia tours, and more. The software requires Mac OS X 10.3.x or Windows XP. The company is currently taking pre-orders. I know many of you use some version of this software currently, so this news may be of interest. |
